1 preface with the urban construction planning and development, the maintenance of underground pipelines is becoming more and more important, especially the maintenance of gas pipe network. Gas pipeline transportation of flammable, explosive, poisonous gas, if gas leakage not discovered in time may cause explosion and poisoning casualty, to prevent and eliminate due to gas leak safety hazards caused by the people used the fast, accurate, convenient leak detection equipment and advanced and practical detection method. This paper focuses on the characteristics of leak detection methods and instruments. When the gas pipeline leaks occur, the combustible gas in the vicinity of the leak will spread to the different directions, some diffusion to the gas pipeline in the vicinity of the wells, cable wells, water supply wells, some diffusion to the ground, available leak detector from the ground gleaning combustible gas concentration to find leakage is existence, and gas identification, finally carries on the accurate positioning of the leak point. These methods have been widely adopted at home and abroad, and have achieved remarkable results.
